MAY SATURDAY COMPETITION played in perfect weather

Many thanks to Robert and anyone who assisted him with Saturday’s Competition. A great turnout of players, with 26 competing to make a take home prize pool of $52. Four previous 2022 winners each had a handicap of one point and three of these players were part of the competition.

At the end of two doubles games, there were three players with the perfect score of 26 – Peter, Dee (regular visitors from ESP), Van and Ha – Van’s score was reduced by 1 point as a previous winner, so a count back was required to decide the winner from Peter, Dee and Ha . Dee had 10 points scored against her, Ha 9 points and the ultimate winner, with heavy pockets on the way home, was Peter who had 8 points scored against him in the two games. Congratulations, Peter.

Thanks to all players for supporting the Competition and making it so much fun. The next Saturday Competition, with no Election (that I know of!), will be held on 18 June. See you there.

APRIL SATURDAY COMPETITION AND CELEBRATIONS FOR OUR NATIONAL WINNERS

In wonderful weather conditions, 25 players took to the pistes to find the winner of the April Saturday Competition. After two 45 minute doubles games, with teams selected by a draw from the boules buckets, we had three players with the perfect score of 26. Marty, Heike and Ann all scored 13 in each of their games, so it was a count back to determine the winner of the $50 prize pool. Ann had 14 points scores against her in her two games, Marty’s opponents scored 6 in each of his games and Heike only had 7 points scored against her, so it was Heike who took home the prize money. Well done to all participants and thank you for making it a great day.

Then came the Club celebration of our members’ success at last weekend’s Nationals competitions. Van Nguyen and Gavin Scott (with Harold from NSW) took out the Open Men’s Triples Championship and Melissa Scott (with two interstate players) came second in the Open Women’s Triples Championship. Our President, Allan Sanderson, very proudly announced that the win in the Open Men’s Triples Championship is the first Seniors National Championship in the Club’s 26 year history. A complimentary drink and a burger and dessert was enjoyed by all members – thank you to the Committee for organising and supplying these refreshments which made for a great Club celebration.

FOUNDERS CUP – 10 April 2022

Twenty one teams contested today’s Founders Cup, a doubles competition in honour of the founder of Prospect Petanque Club, Mike Mulvihill. The weather was kind to us, with a light breeze to be enjoyed in the shade.

Three games were played before lunch with Selena and Ryan, of Novar Gardens Club, finishing on top of the ladder. It was a knock out competition after lunch, again with timed games, with Principale, Consolante and Convivial divisions.

In the Principale division, the semi-finalists were Selina and Ryan, Deric and Bruce, Roland and Illiano and Alain and Jean Paul, which led to a Grand Final between Deric and Bruce and Alain and Jean Paul, with Alain and Jean Paul (Club de’Petanque Adelaide) taking out the competition. They each received a medal, a beautifully engraved beer stein and a bottle of red wine.

Consolante semi-finalists were Peter and Ian, Allan and Sandy, Gavin and Ha and Giselle and Jean Luc, with Gavin and Ha (Prospect) taking out the Grand Final from Peter and Ian.

The semi-finalists in the Convivial division were Kenny and Jean, Lee and Jan and Judy and Sue, with Judy and Sue (Novar Gardens) winning the Grand Final against Kenny and Jean.

Many thanks to all competitors and those who assisted in the setting up, running and packing up for the Cup and a big thank you to those who helped out with the lunch and refreshments.

A BIG DAY AT PROSPECT PETANQUE – including the March Saturday Competition and a Walkabout Prospect and Dinner

A record 29 players competed in this month’s Saturday Competition, which included five visitors. At $2/player entry fee, that made a prize pool of $58. Three players finished with the perfect score of 26 – Robyn, John and Van – so a count back was again needed this month to decide the winner. John had 11 points scored against him, Robyn 9 points and Van’s opponents did not score any points – so it was Van who went home with heavy pockets. We now have three members with a one point handicap – Michael, Kevin and Van, so their overall scores next month will be reduced by one point. A great competition in great weather conditions, if you could manage to get in the shade!!

Our April Saturday Competition will be held on 16 April, commencing at 3.00 pm with registrations by 2.55 pm.

Van – our March 2022 Saturday Competition Winner

Seventeen members stayed on to participate in the Walkabout Prospect – a walking version of the car rallies that were so popular in the 1970s. Everyone set out enthusiastically with their question sheets and pens, looking for answers to 21 questions. One member returned very happy that she had learned some interesting facts about the area during her walk. A family were using the BBQ in the playground next door, to find themselves visited by 17 PPC members looking for the answer to the question “How can you get assistance if the electric BBQ is faulty?” The winner of the Walkabout Prospect was Jacques with 18 questions out of 21 correct, followed by Kym with 17.5 out of 21 and Julia, a visitor, took out the prize for the first home.

Iced water was available for the returning walkers and a Road Signs Quiz was distributed once people had caught their breath. There were 9 signs to recognise and interpret and some of the results of the quiz indicated there is room for some revision!! Dinner comprised Quiche, chips and salad, followed by Fruit Salad and Ice Cream.

Many thanks to everyone for making the day so successful.

CLUB DE PETANQUE D’ADELAIDE’S FOUNDATION CUP in their 45th birthday year

It was a full house at Adelaide Club today for their Foundation Cup and further celebrations of their 45th Birthday. After three timed matches before lunch, the teams were divided into four divisions – Principal, Consolante, Convivial and Complimentaire. Prospect’s Janet and Michael headed the Principal division, with Gavin and Van and Brett and Allan playing in the Consolante division and Yvonne and Jan contesting the Complimentaire competition.

Janet and Michael qualified for the Principal Final against Ray and Lionel and it was Ray and Lionel who took home the trophies and wine. Gavin and Van fought out the Consolante Final against Jean-Luc and Gary and won the game 13-1. Yvonne and Jan were awarded the prize in the Complimentaire division. All presentations were done by two representatives from Bunnings, one of the Club’s recent sponsors.

During the day SAPL took the opportunity to present Melissa and Van their trophies from last week’s State Singles Open and Women’s Competitions which have been engraved with their names.

Many thanks to Adelaide for their fantastic hospitality and efficient running of the competition and for feeding so many people, under strict Covid rules, with a wholesome meal.

THREE PLAYERS WITH A PERFECT SCORE in the February Saturday Competition

We had 25 competitors, making a prize pool of $50, for today’s February Saturday Competition. In wonderful weather, Peter (a very welcome visitor), Ha and Kevin managed a perfect score in both of their games and it came to a count back to decide the winner. Peter had 11 points scored against him, Ha 10 points and Kevin had 9 points against, so it was Kevin who had to carry home the sizeable kitty. For Kevin, it was his first game since he played in the November Saturday Competition – makes you wonder about “practice makes perfect”?? Peter had a deja vous experience as he also lost out on the prize after a count back in January. Well done to all competitors. Our next Saturday Competition will be on 19 March, so it’s a case of getting your vote in for the State Elections early enough to be at the Club to register for the competition by 2.55 pm.

Thanks are given to Yvonne who provided the food last Wednesday evening – tuna mornay, either plain or curried, with either white or brown rice and followed by a delicious dessert. Not only did Yvonne do all of the preparation, serving and cleaning up, but she insists on donating all of the ingredients. A mighty job, Yvonne.

The winner – Kevin
Ha, Kevin and Peter – all scored full points for both games

2022 COMMITTEE CUP – A great day was had by all!

Twenty five teams took up the challenge of this year’s doubles Committee Cup at Prospect Petanque Club. Three timed games were played before lunch, with players divided into Principale, Consolante and Convivial for the post lunch finals.

The players to make the grade to participate in the Principale finals were Selina and Craig, Alain and Jean Paul, Peter and Haejung, Deb and Anna, Rada and Domenic, Ray and Lionel, Jean-Luc and Van and Gavin. The team taking home the beautifully inscribed wine glasses, medals and wine were Alain and Jean Paul, from Adelaide Club after an excellent final against Van and Gavin.

The semi-finalists in the Consolante group were Melissa and Janet, Roland and Iliano, Peter and Sue and Bruce and David, with Bruce and David taking the Final from Melissa and Janet.

The semi-finalists in the Convivial group were Miriam and Kathy, Richard and Dee, Judith and Sandy and Jean and Kenny, with Jean and Kenny being the victors in this group.

The prize for the highest achieving women’s team went to Deb and Anna and the best performing couple were Peter and Haejung.

Thank you to all players for joining in the day, and to Club members who assisted with the set up, organisation and running of the competition and packing up and who looked after the bar and food. It couldn’t happen without you.

2022 SATURDAY COMPETITION OFF TO A FLYING START

We had 20 competitors in this month’s Saturday Competition, including 2 visitors who have very recently arrived from Sydney – Peter and Hae Jung. Peter tied with Michael after two games to both have a score of 26, but Michael took home the kitty of $40 as he only had 7 points scored against him, while Peter’s opponents scored 12 points. Michael now has a handicap of 1 point for the rest of this calendar year, or until he wins again this year to add to his handicap.

It was good to see such a good opening to the Saturday Competition, during these times of uncertainty caused by Covid and we had wonderful weather. A cool breeze to be enjoyed, once you got out of the sun.

The next Saturday Competition will be held on 19 February.

DECEMBER SATURDAY COMPETITION

For the first time this year we had a player win the Saturday Competition for a second time. Melissa won both of her games, as did Marilyn, and they both had a one handicap to be deducted. This took them back to 25 to join Stan, who also had a score of 25. The winner was decided by count back, with Melissa only having 3 points scored against her, while Stan conceded 9 points and Marilyn conceded 11 points. Congratulations to Melissa, who took home the prize kitty.

The LAURIE ANDERSON CUP was also decided on Saturday, with Marilyn getting her name on the trophy. The Laurie Anderson Cup was awarded to the player with the most points, excluding handicaps, over the entire year’s competition. Before Saturday’s games, Marilyn had 166 points and Robert had 165. When teams were drawn, Marilyn and Robert were in opposing teams, with Marilyn and her partner winning the game. Marilyn ended with a final score of 192 and Robert had a score of 170. Well done and congratulations, Marilyn.

Members (we had 18 in Saturday’s competition) in attendance were keen for the competition to continue in 2022, so it is ‘game on’ on Saturday 15 January. Register by 2.55 pm for a 3.00 pm, for 2 x 45 minute doubles games, teams drawn from the bucket. $2/player entry, with the winner taking home the prize pool. All handicaps from 2021 will be scrapped with everyone starting afresh in 2022.

December’s winner – Melissa
