We recently lost one of our Founding Members, Sue Williams, and remembered her, with love and thanks for her contribution over the past 25 years, on Saturday 25 September.
Sue, with her husband Brett, gave outstanding service right up to the last month of her life. We are indebted to her as a quality player and manager in South Australian and National Petanque teams, club photographer, and fundraiser in the club’s early days. She will be fondly remembered for giving so much of herself to our club and will remain forever in our hearts and memories.
Twenty players contested today’s Saturday Competition, with five players – Ha, Van, Melissa, Allan and Richard V – scoring the perfect 26 over the two games. Three of these players had a one point handicap, after having won an earlier competition, which left Melissa and Richard V to share the prize money. A great competition in wonderful weather. Thank you to all participants.
It was announced today that the Laurie Anderson Cup would be awarded at the end of the year to the player with the highest score over all competitions, disregarding handicaps. Laurie very kindly donated a beautiful trophy some years ago and it was awarded to three players and then lapsed. Currently there are seven players with cumulative scores in excess of 100 points and we have three months of the competition yet to be completed. So mark the third Saturday of the month into your diary and keep competing to add to your cumulative score.
Eight teams of six players competed in the annual Super Sixers Competition on Sunday 12 September. The weather was moderate at the beginning of the competition, lulling us into disbelieving what had been forecast for the day. The teams represented five Clubs and the competition was doubles and triples, men’s, women’s and mixed with Captains nominating the players for each game. It took a bit to keep up with who was playing with whom, against whom and where but the day was thoroughly enjoyed by all competitors. The only downer was the bad weather that had to be endured during play – it seemed to calm down while we were under cover for lunch!!
The Principale division was won by Prospect’s BT Warriers (Melissa, Gavin, Van, Janet, Marty and Michael) with 5 wins, from Runners Up Novar Gardens’ Purple Power (Jonathan, Selina, Judy, Giselle, Gary and Ryan) with 4 wins. Adelaide Hills – Hills Hoisters – (Anthony, Lleanne, Deb, Ross, Dirk and Greg) took out the Consulante division with 4 wins and the Runners Up were Eastern Suburbs – Boule Devant (Ray, Tory Sandy, Shiela, Shirley and Lionel) with 1 win.
A great day of something different, with a yummy lunch and nibbles. Many thanks to those involved in setting up and pulling down, and food preparation and serving and to our competition organiser, Allan Sanderson, for the many hours spent in preparing the game sheets and keeping track of the results.
A wonderful crowd today for Laurie Anderson’s celebration for his 90th birthday. Laurie was born on 31/7/1931 and the recent lockdown meant his celebrations had to be postponed until today. His family and Club friends gathered to celebrate and Laurie was presented with a medal for being “Our Saturday Hero”.
Laurie was born in Bo’ness Scotland (20mins from Edinburgh) and arrived in Australia in January, 1971. His daughter Liz and son John attended the celebrations and his son Bill joined in during the speeches by phone.
We all wish Laurie many happy, healthy years to come.
Two wins for Prospect at the State Triples at Eastern Suburbs Petanque Club. Melissa, Gavin and Van won the Consolante and Janet, Michael and Marty won the Convivial. All after one and a half days of competition, rain and the lights being turned on to see out the final match of the Convivial division in which Prospect was up 12 points to 6 when Novar Gardens started to make a come back to bring the game to 12 all. A breathtaking finish to see Prospect hold on to take out the division. Well done to all players, officials and ESP for hosting the event.
We had wonderful sunshine and a great crowd for this month’s Saturday Competition with 28 players competing, making a very healthy prize pool. Four players scored 13 in both of their games – Alison, Richard H, John and Van. Alison and Van each have a one point handicap, having won a previous competition, so it was then a count back between Richard H and John. John took the booty home, having only 3 points scored against him while Richard H had 18.
The September Saturday Competition will be held on 18 September. 3.00 pm kick off, with registrations by 2.55 pm, please.
Many members took the opportunity to get some coaching tips from Gavin, Glenis and Stan prior to the Competition. Glenis and Stan focused on Pointing skills and will look at Shooting next session which will be held on 4 September. Due to the State Triples Competition coaching will not be held next Saturday, 28 August.
We had a good attendance at the AGM, with reports presented and Office Bearers and Committee Members elected. Members were treated to a complimentary hamburger, cooked by Marty and Michael, followed by a scrummy dessert of Waffles, Caramelised Banana and Ice Cream, thanks to Sophie.
During the evening Wendy sold raffle tickets to raise funds for Cancer Research as part of The Longest Table initiative. Wendy supplied three hampers for prizes – Wine, Food and Mystery. The Wine hamper was won by James, Gavin won the Food hamper and Yvonne the Mystery hamper. We are all waiting to see Yvonne on Saturday to find out what was in her hamper.
We had wonderful weather for the Prospect Cup, with 17 teams competing. Preliminary games were held before lunch and teams were then divided into four Divisions – Principale, Consolante, Convivial and Friendly – for knock out games after lunch.
Melissa and Van took out the Prospect Cup from Deb and Ray. The Consolante Division was won by Jan and Allan with Giselle and Ryan runners up, while the Convivial Division was won by Anna and Nathan from Heike and John. The Friendly Division final was fought out by Janet and Michael and Lynda and Alain, with Janet and Michael taking home the wine.
Twenty four teams contested the annual Prestige Cup on Sunday 18 July, with the trophies for the Principale division sponsored by our very loyal sponsor, Prestige Trophy, Badge & Engraving on Main North Road, Nailsworth. It was a doubles competition which made for busy pistes.
