How to Play
Simple rules of pétanque.
Players form opposing teams generally of one, two or three players. The maximum number of boules (metal balls) used in a game is twelve.
| Teams: |
|
|
| Singles |
1 player |
3 boules each player |
| Doubles |
2 players |
3 boules each player |
| Triples |
3 players |
2 boules each player |
Teams toss a coin to decide which team plays first. The winner selects where they would like to play then draws a circle on the ground 35-50cm in diameter. From the circle one player throws the cochonnet (small wooden ball) between 6 and 10 metres.
The first player then throws one boule towards the cochonnet, aiming to get as close as possible. The boule is thrown while standing still in the circle, with the palm of the throwing hand facing downwards when releasing the boule.
The opposing team then throws a boule, attempting to get closer to the cochonnet. If they get closer to the cochonnet, the first team plays again. If they do not get closer, they continue to throw until they do so or run out of boules, whichever comes first.
The team not closer to the cochonnet keeps playing until they get closer or run out of boules.
When all boules have been played the score is added up. The boule closest to the cochonnet wins the end and scores one point for that team. Additional points are scored for any other boules the winning team has closer to the cochonnet than the opposition's closest boule.
The winner of the end draws a circle around the cochonnet and begins a new end.
Play continues until one team scores 13 points.

13Mar08 Report from Jean François VEYSSIERE,
Pétanque Australia, National director of Coaching
CIEP AUSTRALIA-(registration pending)
President: jf@exquisine.com.au
Secretary: afigon@bigpond.net.au

Thursday, 6 March 2008
Diffusion: PA
It's been only a few week since I started my new challenge in my role of National Director of Coaching. PA has given me a few objectives to achieve which includes, assisting to the development and formation of players of any levels in our leagues and clubs plus improving our performances at international level. To help me achieve these goals, I have appointed a few key people to the following positions:
- Pierre Figon National Coach in charge of the women category (he is also the Secretary of CIEP)
- Tim Whelan, National Coach is in charge of the 18-30 years old players, what we call Development Squad.
- Remi Ghetti, National Coach, in charge of the juniors or under 18 years old and the preparation of the junior team Going to the World championship in 2009
These coaches will work with their peers in all the states when possible. The State Coach will be the relay to conduct our programs locally and therefore we will have a linear progression around the country.
To be on line with FIPJP, we are setting-up CIEP Australia. This structure will welcome coaches and umpires. CIEP, although independent of PA management, will have a wide range of activities that will be always in tune with what our Federation requires:
- Increasing the number of coaches. (PA wants a coach per club)
- Preparing and training national teams going overseas (National Coaches)
- General level of skills...
We are now able to give a diploma to the coach who is recognised internationally. In April, the new course for Level 1 Australian Coach will be deployed across Australia (Perth, Sydney, Adelaide, Melbourne).
Pétanque in Australia is either played socially or competitively. If the social side is the backbone of petanque, the sport side is our shop window. At our 3 national competitions (Interstate, National and Easter) the coaches will be able to assess, monitor and select our best athletes to represent Australia in any international events. A calendar of those international tournaments will be ready soon, and we will try to send a team whenever possible. I know money is a key factor, but playing a minor sport means that players and coaches have to pay for travel costs and sometimes hotel as well.
I asked that our coaches to work closely with the Leagues and the clubs to help in the development of all players. We can only improved Pétanque by working together, in collaboration on the same objectives.
I look forward for this year.
Yours Sincerely.
Jean François VEYSSIERE
National director of Coaching.
