Trans Tasman Cup, Sydney

Five proud South Aussies at the
Trans-Tasman Cup in Sydney

Five South Australians were selected to play in the 3rd Trans-Tasman Pétanque Series, played in Sydney on the 14-15 May 2005.

Four of these proud South Aussies are Prospect Pétanque Club members – Brett and Sue Williams, Mike Mulvihill and Valmai Nicoll.

They were joined by Pete Sharpe from Adelaide Hills Club to form the South Australian contingent of the all-Australian squad.

Australia won the competition 82 points to New Zealand’s 58 points.

The weekend was a true delight – an enjoyable two days of bonhomie between Aussies and Kiwis – very well organised and ably supported by Pétanque Australia.

Special thanks go to Gary Hosie from NSW for taking on the role of team coach.

“Our over 60’s team was magnificent as per the results. They were proud to represent their country and happy to have been given this opportunity. Their joy and enthusiasm was great to see,” said the President of Pétanque Australia.

Valmai Nicoll (SA) and Solange Philogene (NSW) were an outstanding doubles team winning all but one of their games, finishing with 90% average wins.

The Open Competition was hotly contested, with the final score being 55 points to 53. Happily those 55 points were Australia’s and therefore we retain the Trans-Tasman cup.

Snake Cup
January 8 & 9 at Prospect Pétanque

In Memory of Jake McKee

It has been widely acclaimed as the best event staged at the Prospect Pétanque Club in its past 10 years.

Our dear young friend and champion Jake McKee would have been rapt, it truly was a fitting memorial to Jake, made all the more special by his great mates, James Wright, Kevin Wright  and Pierre Bommarito  taking the big prize.

The competition was fantastic with 40 of Australia’s top players from interstate challenging SA’s best. The final took 2 hours and provided some of the best pétanque seen in this country.  Well done also to the runners up Patrick Dufresne, Alan Irwin and Gerard Berton.

Testimony to the standard of play was the fact that last year’s winners had to be content with victory in the consolante final.

Jake’s parents, Heather and Michael with James Wright blow out the candle that burned throughout the tournament in Jake’s memory.

Congratulations to Allan Sanderson President of Prospect Pétanque Club, the committee and members for putting on such a great event. The atmosphere of fun and friendship (and intense competition) was generated at the Friday night function and this set the tone for the entire weekend.

Kevin Wright and Josie Petrolo have been the driving force behind the Snake Cup, they have done a magnificent job in attracting  interstate players, sponsorship and support for the competition. The success of the event is very much a reflection of their passion and commitment to remembering Jake within the pétanque community in the most fitting way.

Congratulations to all the winners who shared $4,500 worth of prizes as well as a raffle prize of a bottle of 1984 Grange.
