Coonawarra Triumphs
This year a record number of team entries, saw 175 players at the Coonawarra Vignerons Classic Clash Petanque Tournament, with the popping of corks, clashing of steel balls, and the screams of excitement (and despair) echoing around the Coonawarra Park as the interstate rivalry was seen again in this once a year event.
With the help of the Coonawarra Vignerons Association and other local sponsors, the Coonawarra Petanque Club held its 14th annual triples tournament on Saturday 13th and Sunday 14th February 2010 in the Coonawarra Park. The two day competition was played in almost ideal weather.
With 58 teams entered for the first of competition and 54 teams playing on Sunday, teams from Melbourne, Avoca, Adelaide, Apollo Bay, Perth and a good turn out of local teams attending, were all playing for over $4500 in cash and prizes.
“We always enjoy coming to Coonawarra for this 2 day tournament, the friendly atmosphere and standard of the competitors is excellent. It is a fun, but very competitive event.” said Rex Brown from Apollo Bay, a regular visitor to the tournament.
The final of the tournament was a very tight and exciting affair, enjoyed by the majority of players “staying on” to get their “fill” of the “best of the best”. The Coonawarra team of Guy Detot, Simon Fennell and friend Jean-Jacque Devaroux (week-end Melbourne ex-pat) put on a superb display of skill and accuracy to defeat their Melbourne rivals (undefeated till the final) by the smallest of margins; 13 – 12. Of course…the ‘Coonawarra boys’ had the home state crowd behind them, cheering them on for a great win to keep the trophy in South Australia, and claim the championship for the 3rd time for Coonawarra.
Other successful Coonawarra teams, of Andrew Jackman, Stuart Abbey and Grant Hetherington had a very good weekend and were placed 5th outright for the tournament, while Mal Redman, Deb Redman and Alistair Rowland finished 8th overall. Novice players Dan Redman, George Kidman and Trent McShane finished in a very respectfull 18th place.
“For my team to win this tournament has been very exciting for our whole club and shows that the Coonawarra players are of a very high standard” said Guy Detot, President Coonawarra Petanque Club. ‘The whole weekend has been beautiful and was enjoyed by all who came along. It was really good to see the local folk coming out and supporting the event, and many of our visitors have already said that they will come back, so next year could be even bigger again!’.
